According to the Spanish Chronicles, in 1570 there was a great exodus of Tainos from the coast and valleys to the central mountain region to escape Spanish repression and abuse. One of these chronicles, the census of 1777 and 1787, show that there were 2,000 Indians living in the area of the Indieras. These were the descendents of the Taino that sought refuge in the mountainous regions of the island.
It must be pointed out that the Indieras region, between 1570 and 1787, covered an area stretching across the Central Mountain Range. It was the most remote and isolated region on the island. We can not rule out the influence of this population in the ethnocultural formation of present day boricuas.
